Social Media Campaign
Social Media Campaign (SMC):
Social media is a great tool for research, education, and advocacy and it has proven to be useful in those three categories. People go on their phones constantly, making their way onto platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter. These platforms are great places for people to post information, whether it be scientific or not. Not only can you read the information people post, but you can also find related content and accounts. Twitter is an especially great platform that is great for research, education, and advocacy. They specifically have features where you can find recommended and similar content, like the "You might like" column. Additionally, people can add hashtags on their tweets that you can click on and direct yourself to more content under that hashtag. We utilized this during our SMC, as all our tweets were under #39canimals.

SMC Project
About the SMC: We participated in a week long Social Media Campaign Project. During this week, our goal was to research our species and share the information we learn about the problems they face, solutions to those problems, and organizations that support our species. We spent two days on problems, two days on solutions, two days on organizations, and one day on our infographic. Each day we tweeted 3 tweets about the corresponding topic we chose, spreading awareness and advocating for our species.

Objectives:
-
Practice researching, obtaining sources, and increasing our knowledge for our Advocacy Project
-
Find problems our species face and possible solutions to those problems
-
Look into 2 chosen organizations that focus on our species
-
-
Practice defining the problems we researched and making arguments for good, possible solutions for our Advocacy Project
-
Use rhetoric (logos, ethos, pathos) in a social media environment
-
Research the statistics and facts about the problems our species face and create an infographic with that information
-
Raise awareness about our species and the organizations that support them
-
Learn how to successfully curate social media content and posts to share information
Shark Organizations

This is one of my best tweets about the Shark Research Institute (SRI). This tweet was a thread tweet that contained a picture from their website of a list of other organizations SRI is affiliated with. I also included a link to their website and tagged their Twitter account so followers could check out their other tweets and find out more about them.
This is one of my best tweets about Shark Angels. This tweet is a picture off of the organization's website. It depicts a list of 15 different ways people can help save sharks. I really liked this page of their website because these 15 things are easily doable. Therefore, I thought it would be a great way to spread awareness on how to help save the sharks from endangerment.
Shark Problems
Problem 1:
Shark Finning

Shark finning is a major problem that impacts sharks greatly and severely declines their population all because of human gain and desire. This is one of my best problem tweets about shark finning. This thread tweet introduces what shark finning is, explains why we need to keep sharks alive, and has an interesting article that followers can read to learn more about the issue.
Problem 2:
Overfishing

Overfishing is another major problem that sharks face and the nets used in overfishing often traps and kills sharks. This is another one of my best problem tweets about overfishing. This thread tweet starts off with a mind-blowing quote from an article that addresses this issue. The second part of the tweet then links that article so followers can read more on overfishing's devastating impact.
Shark Solutions
Problem 1:
Shark Finning
Problem 2:
Overfishing

There are different solutions to shark finning and one of the main solutions is reducing the demand for shark fins. This is one of my best solution tweets on shark finning. This thread tweet includes possible solutions to the problem of shark finning. There is also a picture that is hopefully captivating to followers because of its disturbance. This will hopefully inspire followers to partake in the solutions.
There are different solutions to prevent sharks from dying by overfishing. One way to do this is by adding more protected areas in our oceans. This is another one of my best solution tweets on overfishing. This tweet is short and simple. It gets right to the point, informing followers on how they can make a difference to the lives of sharks by saving them from overfishing.
Infographic

This is the infographic I created on the problems sharks face. The main message I was trying to convey through this infographic is the many threats that endanger a keystone species. Sharks are essential for our ecosystem because they are apex predators. Therefore, without sharks our ocean's ecosystems would be destroyed. By displaying 5 different problems sharks encounter, I hope to inspire change. By educating people on the dangers us humans place on sharks, I hope we can encourage a change and help save this species now!
